SHAKY CBA GETTING HELP FROM ABA.(Sports)

The Albany Patroons will open their Continental Basketball Association season a week from tonight at Washington Avenue Armory. But they won't be playing the Lawton-Fort Sill (Okla.) Cavalry and former Patroons coach Micheal Ray Richardson.

The opponent will likely be the Montreal Matrix, a team that doesn't even play in the CBA.

"Whose bright idea was this?" Richardson asked Thursday afternoon from Oklahoma.

The answer: Jim Coyne, the general manager of the Patroons, who saw problems on the horizon for the CBA. To have a season, the league reached out for help from another minor league, the American Basketball Association.
