Vic: Man fined $600,000 for smuggling cigarettes

A Melbourne man has been fined $600,000 for smuggling two million cigarettes into
Australia in a refrigerated shipping container.

The 46-year-old East St Kilda man, ADI ASTAWA, who admitted the offence, had earlier
declared that the container, imported in November 1999, contained foodstuffs.

Imposing the fine, Supreme Court judge Justice BERNARD BONGIORNO said ASTAWA tried
to evade customs duty of almost $400,000.
